Sciatica is defined as a set of symptoms including pain, numbness, muscular weakness, pins and needles
or tingling and difficulty in the movement of the leg. The pain can be very severe and is typically felt
in the low back, pelvis, thigh and radiating down below the knee, sometimes to the foot. Sciatica may be
caused by compression or irritation to the sciatic nerve or to one of five nerve roots that give rise to
the sciatic nerve. The symptoms are often felt on one side of the body and down one leg, but sciatica can
be present on both sides.
Treatment depends on the actual cause of the sciatica and to what degree the nerve is being compressed
or inflamed. An Osteopath will be able to examine and diagnose this condition. Osteopaths tailor the
treatment to you and your condition. Patients with Sciatica typically respond well to osteopathy and
therefore recovery can be quicker.
